Piaggio Vespa scooter

Piaggio Vespa scooter

People call us the generation Z. We grew up with MP3s, gameboys, iPods, text messaging, Playstations, Xboxes, WiFi and countless similar luxuries. But in the process we missed out on rock and roll, the summer of love, VW buses, discos, tie and dye clothing and flower power.
There is one other thing that was as much a part of the 70's as dreadlocks and peace pipes – a little scooter that almost always had flowers painted on them. Those of us who missed out on this whole era have always looked longingly at pictures and videos of these little machines that were all but killed by the arrival of Splendors, CT100s and Activas. But not anymore, because Piaggio has just made this summer our summer of love. It marks the return of the wasp in all its glory.
And this time it's not disguised as a frugal consumer. This time it comes to the Indian shores as a fashion statement.

Piaggio's iconic Vespa returns to India

As far as fashion statements go, the Vespa is like a Fendi clutch that compliments your Salvatore Ferragamo dress or a Duchamp tie that goes well with your Armani suit. Everything from the round headlamps and the chrome plated mirrors to the bright colours (right now it comes in black, red, yellow and white) stand out like Ursula Andress on a beach full of hairy men. The Vespa (having dropped the LX 125 moniker in favour of just 'Vespa' in India) is the classic retro shape meeting the modern designer look.
The switchgear did not look like they were of very high quality and had gaping panel gaps. But this might just be a pre-production niggle. Hopefully. The instrument cluster is clean and has a speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge and a clock. There are lots of storage spaces with a lockable glove box behind the front apron and underseat storage is good enough for an open face helmet. The entire monocoque frame is made from steel with some fiber thrown in for the fender and headlight housing.
Despite the entire frame being constructed of steel, the scooter is extremely light and this can be felt the moment you take it off the stand. It is extremely nimble and can be flicked around by just twitching your behind. To put it into perspective, imagine the pizza delivery scooter from the Grand Theft Auto series and you will know what I'm talking about. It uses a single sided trailing arm at the front and dual hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear.
Ride quality is really good and the worst that most Indian roads can throw at you are disposed of without breaking a sweat. The biggest let down though are the tyres and the front brakes. The 150mm drum feels like a brick. Squeeze it hard and the scooter slows down, er, slowly. But squeeze it harder and the wheel locks up. Add to this mix, tyres that look a lot like it came from my dad's Bajaj Chetak from some twenty years ago and you have a serious problem.
This lack of stopping power however is not so much of a worry because the Vespa's 125cc mill is not in a hurry to go anywhere. The 125cc, three-valve engine makes 10.06PS and 10.6Nm. This means the Vespa is not ideal for power hungry, performance freaks. Then again, if you belong to that bracket, you wouldn't be looking at a Vespa anyway. However I did feel that a bit (just a bit) more punch would have made this scooter immensely more fun.
While the Vespa is perfectly happy trundling along at 50-60kmph zipping through traffic, refinement is what this motor scores full marks for. Comparisons to a hot knife slicing butter won't be too far off. Piaggio claims a fuel efficiency of 60kmpl for the Vespa, which (if it makes a similar figure in real life conditions) makes it one of the most fuel efficient scooters in the Indian market.
Then again, those who want to stretch every last drop of fuel for all its worth is not the ideal Vespa rider either. The folks at Piaggio are very clear about where they are placing the Vespa brand. It is not meant for the performance hungry or the economy conscious. It is a lifestyle product and has been priced at Rs 66,000 ex-Maharashtra. For my fellow generation Z peeps, this means that for roughly the price of three Xbox 360s we can get to experience a piece of history we missed.

Mercedes-Benz GL

Mercedes-Benz GL

Mercedes Benz Cars

Price Range:
67.19 to 72.37 lakh
Mercedes-Benz GL-ClassVariations on the ‘large 4x4 Merc’ theme because the GL is basically a larger seven-seat and tinsel version of the ML. Turns out that either is a pretty solid bet as an actual vehicle, but a little tarty for proper taste-mongers.

  • Comfort

Big and comfy and capable of steamrolling any pocked roads into submission. Can get a little wallowy if you decide to attack a set of hairpins, which has a direct effect on the colour-pallette of rear-seat passengers, but otherwise long distances are no problem.
    Rated 6 out of 10
  • Performance

The GL comes with two diesels (3.0 and 4.0 CDI) offering 224bhp and 306bhp, and the 5.4-litre V8 petrol churning out 388bhp. We'd go for the 450 CDI - the extra grunt over the 350 CDI is needed to help move this leviathan of a car.
    Rated 8 out of 10
  • Cool

If you're a footballer's wife then they probably look quite attractive, but the truth is that you can go cheaper and have as much space and prestige.
    Rated 3 out of 10
  • Quality

There's a fabulous feeling that Merc has started spending money on the bits that matter - and a decent interior is very important in this sector.
    Rated 7 out of 10
  • Handling

Isn't as sharp to steer as a BMW X5 or Porsche Cayenne, but ride is acceptable. The GL-Class, despite its size, doesn't suffer much body roll and thanks to air suspension, road imperfections are smoothed away.
    Rated 5 out of 10
  • Practicality

If you're genuinely after lots of seats, then the GL is still a little tight for all-adults. Although it's vast (at 508cm, it's 50cm longer than the Land Rover Discovery) it's still tight inside. Six adults will find it difficult to sit in the three rows, the optional last row fit for children only. And with all seven seats in use, boot space is limited (300 litres).
    Rated 8 out of 10
  • Running costs

If you buy something this large, then running costs can't be a massive priority for you. If you're a walking paradox though, be warned that it's pretty thirsty and emissions aren't pretty.

2012 Mercedes-Benz S Class

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Photos Mercedes-Benz S-Class 5 User Reviews Rs. 90,17,304

Long one of the best of the full-size luxury sedan and executive limo segment, the Mercedes-Benz S Class spans a wide range of prices and configurations, but all of them combine a taste for advanced technology and refined quality.

As Mercedes' flagship model, the S Class takes a conservative approach to styling and to changes in its styling--the 2012 model looks much the same as the 2007 model that kicked off the current generation. It's still somewhat understated, yet stately, with smooth and flowing curves mating with upright sides to give a sense of presence. Inside, the S Class is roomy, almost beyond reason in the long-wheelbase versions that are the default in the U.S., with a relaxed and comfortable look and feel despite somewhat ornate and detailed adornments.

Six different models make up the 2012 Mercedes-Benz S Class range, with a diesel, a pair each of V-8s and V-12s, plus one V-6 hybrid. Starting off the range is the S350 BlueTec 4Matic diesel, using a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 rated at 240 horsepower and rated at 21 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. Next we have the S400 Hybrid, which couples a 275-horsepower V-6 gasoline engine with 20-horsepower electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack, enabling the big sedan to reach an EPA-estimated 25 mpg on the highway.

The more mainstream S550 uses a 382-horsepower 5.5-liter V-8, while the 6.0-liter V-12-powered S600 generates a substantial 510 horsepower. AMG, Mercedes' in-house performance brand, tunes up the 5.5-liter V-8 for the S63 AMG to yield 536 horsepower, while the AMG version of the V-12 in the S65 is good for a massive 621 horsepower. While all S Class sedans handle well for their size class--though putting an emphasis on ride quality--the AMG models are standouts, delivering incredible performance for their size. The S63 AMG scuttles to 60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds, while the S65 AMG does the same run in just 4.3 seconds.

All S Class models except for the diesel, which gets 4Matic all-wheel drive as standard equipment, come with standard rear-wheel drive. The S550 can be upgraded to 4Matic. A seven-speed automatic transmission is also standard gear in non-AMG S Classes, in all but the S600, which uses a five-speed.

Whichever engine or model you choose, the S Class range offers very similar interior treatments across the board, though AMG models get special appearance and performance-oriented tweaks. All are very comfortable, with spacious seating and ample head room front and rear. Doors open wide for easy access, there's plenty of in-cabin storage and trunk space, and the ride quality will allow your Perrier to go unspilled as you broker your next stock purchase from the back seat.

As always with the S Class, Mercedes packs in its best and newest technologies for 2012, with features like Active Body Control improving ride quality, night-vision cameras detecting roadside obstacles that would otherwise be invisible, pedestrian recognition technology, active head restraints, adaptive cruise control, and much, much more available on most models.

There's also a whole host of available interior styling and trim options, many more convenience features, and almost no limit to the variations in color combinations.

       XUV W6

    Mahindra XUV 500 W6 2WD Review
Recently launched Mahindra XUV 500 is a huge success in Indian market. The SUV bears testimony to the tough range of wagons popular in India. All the 3 variants including this one are made of monocoque body structure used first time by M&M. A single frame is used to construct the SUV unlike traditional design. All the 3 models are more or less same except the drive option. This particular model is the 2 wheel drive option. Two wheel drive vehicles apply the torque from the engine to the 2 wheels (probably in this case to the front wheels).  XUV 500 W6 2WD is equipped with 2-wheel drive to provide better fuel efficiency and traction. By consolidating the transmission, engine and differential towards one side of the car, the bulk of the weight is moved to that side of the vehicle, which gives tyres a better grip on the road. The other side can then be used for cargo or passengers, making 2-wheel drive more suitable for passenger vehicles. The engine used in this is common to all 3 variants i.e. a masculine 2179 cc mHawk diesel engine delivering 140 bhp power.
The model misses on 6 inch color touch screen infotainment display. Instead it has a monochrome 6 inch infotainment display. GPS navigation system, a DVD player and Tyre tronics are absent. But the model has dual airbags (driver’s and passenger’s). Moreover, the model is well equipped with Cruise audio, phone controls and voice command switches on the steering powered electrically and with tilt adjustments.
